Are there any legal ways to buy raw milk in the state of Indiana?
Q. I buy raw milk cheese from a local farmer (US law requires raw milk cheese be aged at least 60 days), but would like to know more about buying raw milk. I've heard it is legal in many US states. Does anyone know about IN? If so, where can you buy it?
Asked by Katie V - Tue Mar 24 08:11:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not sure about the Indiana laws but if it is illegal, you need to look for a farmer who sells herd shares. This way you technically own part of the herd and therefore can drink the milk of your own animals. I know there are many raw milk activists in Indiana, you just need to search for them.

What can i do to help raw milk not get taken away?
Q. I heard the government is taking it away. If anything they need to take away the homogenized milk that's the more harmful kind at least the raw has good bacteria and probiotics.

A. It is a state by state decision. I've never seen the feds involved, as best I can tell. In some states, raw milk is completely illegal with no work arounds. Many do ban its sale off the farm or directly through stores. In my state, it can't be sold inside city limits, but if outside city limits, the dairy can sell it. We have a great raw milk dairy near us that we use ALL the time! Some states, you have to actually buy a "share" in a cow, then you can get your portion of milk from that cow - which is housed, fed and milked by a dairyman for you. See how it works? To find out actual details, you can go to They are working to make raw milk available to consumers in all 50 states. I believe in CA they can actually sell raw milk… [cont.]

A. Actually it's illegal but there's ways of getting around it. If you own the dairy, you can drink the unpasteurized milk. So what some dairies do is sell you 1 share of their stock( which makes you an owner, which makes it legal for you to buy).( 1 share would cost about $20 for life). When I was with Whole Foods in Orlando, they sold one but it was labeled "for animal consumption only". That was the other way around it. They did however stop selling it and not for the reasons you would think. The dairy that sold it to us was located in Florida and only the Florida region had access to it. Because people in other states found out and all the other out-of -state stores couldn't get it, they decided to drop it. If a dairy labels it that way,… [cont.]

What is healthier - raw milk or sterilized by boiling raw milk?
Q. I've read that by drinking raw milk you could get E. coli, salmonella, listeria, or other diseases. By boiling the raw milk and letting it cool down, will the bacterium go away? If I boil the milk, does the "good stuff" such as vitamins, enzymes... disappear? Thanks. Is there a difference between pasteurized milk from the store and boiled raw milk? Thanks.
Asked by Kevin Plus - Wed Jun 7 09:42:59 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am no expert, but I have read opinions that *certified* raw milk is actually safer even in terms of bacteria counts than pasteurized milk because certified raw milk is actually checked for bacteria, whereas "everyone knows" that pasteurized milk is bacteria-free (which it is *not* even under ideal circumstances) so nobody bothers checking. As I said, I don't know if it's true or not...you have to do the research and make up your own mind.

Raw Milk, Beneficial to health or is it dangerous?
Q. Alot of confusion regarding raw milk. I want to drink raw organic milk from grass fed cows, at a local farm. I have heard it is very healthy, and can help with some of my health problems. Anyone try it, and does it cause Shingles and infections ect.? I understand that there are different levels of organic certification in the UK. What evidence should i ask the farmer about organic certificates? Anything else that i should ask/investigate before drinking raw milk?

A. There was an experiment done about the benefits of enzymes and raw food versus cooked food. this experiment was done by Dr. Francis Pottenger. I also did a paper about raw and pasteurized milk and what i learned shocked and disappointed me. At the very least if i cannot get raw milk i will drink the organic pasterized milk. i learned that milk is a good sorce of calcium but only if it is an organic form meaning in it's natural state. When heat is applied to milk as in pastuerization it then becomes inorganic and the molecular structure has changed and it is not recognized by the body, so the body does not know what to do with it in this form. So in essence, milk that is pasteurized has most of the good stuff missing and destroyed before… [cont.]

A. Point your Browser to "Recombined Milk": Beverage milks can also be prepared by recombining skim milk powder and butter with water. This is often done in countries where there is not enough milk production to meet the demand for beverage milk consumption. The concept is simple. Skim milk powder is dispersed in water and allowed to hydrate. Butter is then emulsified into this mixture by either blending melted butter into the liquid mixture while hot, or by dispersing solid butter into the liquid through a high shear blender device. In some cases, a non-dairy fat source may also be used. The recombined milk product is then pasteurized, homogenized and packaged as in regular milk production. The final composition is similar to that of whole… [cont.]

What is the average percentage of milk fat lost during the processing of raw milk?
Q. In California, Milk processing facility is required to file a monthly report with CA Dept. of Food and Agriculture named "Handler's Monthly Report". Each processor reports milk fat received and lost during processing. I am looking for an average (percentage)of milk fat lost during the processing of milk in CA or US.
Asked by Roger D - Fri Jun 16 15:05:44 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I assume because you have come here for answers to such a specific question, the CA Dept of Food and agri refused to allow you access to the HMR. This may be due to corporate legislation allowing both companies and government to restrict the freedom of information act when it concerns matters of national security. Id like to know how milk fat losses affect national security, but I'm not going to split hairs over it. Fact is that older statistics are probably not restricted, so your local public library may be a good place to start looking for historical records of milk processing statistics and procedures. Good luck!

Is pasteurized milk and raw egg good high in protein and should it be consumed?
Q. I've been consuming 2 raw eggs mixed with pasteurized or boiled milk with sugar daily as a source of high protein. I have seen some changes but i just need to confirm weather its good or not. The sugar is just for taste as raw eggs mixed with milk with out sugar taste awful so i consume it mixing with eggs and I read somewhere that milk causes gums in the intestine with does not allow the protein to be extracted. So raw eggs mixed with milk is good or not.
Asked by AnkEAT - Sat Oct 3 13:06:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. okay, as someone said before, raw eggs can get you salmonella now: raw eggs however is very veryyy easily absorbed by our bodies. which is good personally, i myself stay on the safe side and boil them and eat them... egg protein is the highest level of protein, that's why all protein products are compared against egg protein...so yes egg protein is amazing milk is also very good, now you do NOT want to be adding sugar..actually you want to eliminate all processed/refined sugars from your diet. other than that it's a good natural way...

A. sorry, its enzymes 'taken out' by pasturisation, also the fat globules are broken down into smaller ones. boiling the milk will have exactly the same effect. anyway, i have made yoghourt from milkman's milk and shop bought many times, the problem is getting a decent live culture. my favourite at the moment is the yeo valley stuff. raw milk from a tested herd should be fine to drink as it is. i searched using your question and 'pages from the uk' on google, and got these on the first page; Where To Find Raw Dairy In The UK 'Raw milk is sold at the fashionable Chelsea Farmers Market n London' so, try your local farmers market.

Is raw cow milk safe to drink?
Q. My neighbor has a few dairy cows that were left over from a farm shutting down nearby. The cows don't take steroids or anything. They just graze on regular grass and clean water. My neighbor and her family drink the milk raw. I've never seen them have any problems with it. I looked up raw milk and most of the people claiming the dangerous thing about it is steroids and such but nothing on cows that are healthy and eat healthy, natural cow food (plain ol' grass). Is it safe to drink if the cow is healthy and doesn't take steroids? Please post. Thanks.
Asked by Laura Lynn Gerber - Thu Jun 25 16:06:59 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My opinion - YES - especially if you know how healthy the cows are, and are familiar with how sanitary the milking parlor is. I grew up on a farm with 4 siblings. We all had drank raw cows milk. Never had any problems that we knew of. Many of my friends also were from farm families that drank their own raw milk. It's very tasty, I remember my dad bringing several bottles of milk from the barn every evening and putting them in the fridge. Next morning, he'd pour off some cream from the top for his cereal and coffee. Before we drank any of the milk, we'd shake the bottle to mix it all up. Now, personal opinion aside, there are risks with drinking raw milk - especially if the milking operation isn't as clean as it could be.
