Q. Any recommendation on websites or other info would be helpful.

A. That's not a balanced diet. 1. it lacks alot in enough calcium and phosphorus 2. a diet without red meat lacks in minerals iron, magnesium, copper and zinc. 3. chicken and rice lacks in SEVERAL vitamins..I mean I can't even think of them all. 4. most dogs don't digest brown rice- a grain- so well. It's a filler, provides fiber and TRACE amount of B vitamins and that's it To address the organic part. If you can afford organic meat, organs and raw meaty bones, or however much you can afford, then feed it! Another better choice is feeding pasture raised. but don't be fooled by labels that say "all natural" or "free range" because these regulations are sketchy and not really what you and I imagine. Organic means there are no GMO's fed, no… [cont.]

Are there any Columbus Ohio Farms that sell raw milk or organic meats? Where can I get this stuff?
Q. Also if anyone knows any good organic coupon sources I would love to know. Actually it is legal in Ohio

A. I live in Ohio and I am a member of a herd share near Middletown where I get my raw milk. There are several raw milk dairies in Ohio despite Young's getting out of the raw milk biz and into the overpriced mediocre food restaurant biz. there is an Ohio weston price yahoo group that has people who would know. Also has a listing of all the raw dairies in the USA or will get you contact info for local organic/grass fed meat in the Columbus area. OEFFA is located in Columbus.

My cats new raw meat diet...and fish?
Q. I have decided to start heading towards a raw meat diet for my cat mocha. based on my research i believe it to be best. so i know to introduce it slowly, so i started with tuna actually. regular tuna that we eat. is this a good idea? its presently the only canned food of any kind she has ever wanted to eat. and well i was going to order from feline pride but the cost of shipping was more than the cost of the food, and we cannot afford that. my next idea is to go to a whole foods store and buy organic meat for our family and then some for mocha. I understand I need to somehow incorporate bones into that...is this going to be cheaper in the long run while still being best for our cat? do you have any suggestions on how to add bones, and is… [cont.]

A. The following is from my blog. It should help you get started and will give you some ideas. I would toss the fish, though. If you need to use fishy cat food, that's fine, but don't feed raw fish or bother with "human" fish at all. Just meat. This blog is not intended to serve as your one-stop-shop for raw feeding. But hopefully it'll help you focus on what you need to decide and give you ideas of where to look for more info. I personally chose to feed ground whole prey so I do not supplement*. I still serve some canned food for variety and likely will always have some on hand. I am feeding just chicken at the moment, but will be adding turkey and rabbit, and perhaps other meats when they become available. (This ground meat does… [cont.]

What is the very best wet food for kittens?
Q. Wondering what brand or brands is the most nutritional for kittens. I'm thinking about organic raw meats, but I don't think I will be doing it all the time.
Asked by Hedicat - Mon Oct 9 13:57:59 2006 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Iams kitten food makes a wonderful canned wet food. It's much easier on their stomach. My Persian had horrible sensitivity to most foods and this is how we kept weight on her during the first 6 months. We actually kept her on it for 2 years. You may want to do a healthy mix of wet and dry though, so your kitten doesn't get overweight. Talk about it with your vet. One more thing, while I don't agree with the organic raw meats, I realize you are going to do it anyways. I plead with you not to do it at such a young age. Their immune systems are not up to par yet, and e coli and salmonella could kill the kitten quite quickly. If you must, please consult with your vet first.

feeding my cat raw organic chicken?
Q. I want to feed my cat what she'd eat in the wild. I bought Science Diet Nature's Best (obviously she wouldn't eat kibble in the wild but it's better than grocery store cat food) and it has vegetables and fruit (like cranberries) in it. I was reading "Cat" on wikipedia and it says that cats' digestive systems aren't made to digest and process vegetables, just meat. And in the wild she'd be hunting birds and mice and insects. So, would raw organic chicken be a good diet for her? Is there anything else I should add in? How much should I feed her a day? Thank you :)
Asked by Danielle - Mon Jun 15 13:50:27 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is truly amazing how little some pet owners know about their own pets and their digestive systems. Cats are indeed carnivores. And their digestive tracts are designed for a steady diet of (RAW) meat. And that meat can be left rotting in the sun for three days and they will still eat it and not get sick. Their systems are not the same as ours and they are not affected as badly as we are by the things that crawl on their food. Oh; a cat can still get ill from some bacteria but the chances of it dying are remote. My cat eats meat. I do have dry food on hand but with what the cats eats outside and the meat scraps from the kitchen it rarely eats the dry food.

A. If you're female and over about 20 you might want to get tested for pcos. Many doctors believe that all females over the age of 25 with acne have pcos. I have it and have severe hormonal acne (and you can be thin and have it).

Suggestions for starting a raw diet on a college budget?
Q. Last week I went to our little mom and pop dog/cat food shop and asked them what I could do to put a few extra pounds on my underweight rescue pup. They proceeded to tell me all about raw diet, which I was familiar with (being a wildlife biologist major... familiar with digestive systems in canines) and give both me (to take home) and Zark (to chow down in the store) samples of the products. I really like the idea of it, and so happen to work at a certified organic meat farm that pays me in meat. I can get raw (frozen) meat from them in cow, chicken, goat, pig and sheep. A. I believe that the purina company has spent millions of dollars to develop their feeds, for all animals, not just dogs. I feed it from puppyhood through their adult lives and haven't had a problem. In fact my vet is pleased that one of my dogs eats purina sensitive formula because of her allergies. No doubt that organic is good and better for all of us, dogs included. But the cost can be prohibitive. Also before venturing into the world of organic and raw meat, make sure it will fit into your lifestyle. For example if you are a person who works and has to get up and going early and comes home exhausted, a bowl of dry dog food isn't a really big deal to fix.

Now I gave up all foods of chemical , but I am new so I wanna know how do you choose foods from store that is not chemical-filled? I know you do taking red raw meat home to cook self. Like raw seafoods, milk, and eggs. But I am looking for cookies and chips , so does all foods have to come from starch? How do you know which one cereal is good?

A. I just got into organics a few months ago too. I've learned a lot about it through my first year of college. With research, I found that Meat, Poultry, and Dairy are most important to buy organic because of the disgusting way conventional animals are raised opposed to "free range organic" animals. I buy everything from trader joe's becaue I don't have a whole foods where I live (smaller city). As far as produce goes, if you are on a budget certain things have high pesticide contaminations and some don't. The most contaminated are: peaches, apples, bell peppers, leafy greens, nectrarines, strawberries, cherries, carrots, kale, celery, grapes and pears. The least contaminated are: sweet corn, avacados, pineapples, cauliflower, magoes,… [cont.]

If you feed raw food, y dont u eat raw food?
Q. The bottom line is that there is no proof that raw diets are any better for anything compared to kibble, canned, or home cooked. I have real concerns (not uncommonly documented) about the nutritional adequacy of raw diets, both home prepared and commercial. Of course, there is also the issue of pathogen contamination issue. A relatively unscientific survey by Consumer Reports of grocery chicken showed 80% contamination with Campylobacter, and about 15% with Salmonella - organic and free range were worse in this survey. We have lots of journal articles that support this concern too. So, just the public health issue is enough to make this way of feeding undesirable- its a risk-benefit thing. From the CDC website: "Raw foods of animal… [cont.]

what is the best diet for the dogs ?
Q. I know in the wild they eat raw meat. In domesticated ones, we give them mostly commercial dog food such as dry food. I give mine organic one. But I know vets want us to brush, clean teeth, etc. In the wild there is no need. I've tried BARF or raw meat diet, but it got too expensive. I am thinking they should not need tooth brushing. Is this a new thing since the 80s ? or 90s ?? people did not used to hear such advice before.

A. Wild animals have a much shorter lifespan. There is no best diet that works for all dogs. Age,health, size, activity level all factors in. We have domestic dogs as well as captive born/bred wildlife rescues. When they were all younger, the wild game butcher provided all of the meat scraps and bones we could possibly use.An entire freezer is used just for the off season. When they were more active, alot of fresh game was offered and they did well.We have 14 & 15 yr. old animals.Kibble has always been made available to all.Their need and tolerance for such high protein levels has changed dramatically. In fact, the small domestic dogs tend to get bloody mucuosy stools with too much meat-cooked or raw. What we do offer to meet their chewing… [cont.]

A. He will not be using up as much energy now as your 2 yr. old. Try putting him on a low protein diet and maybe you could cut his meal by a third each day and make sure he doesn't get a lot of treats. Glucosamine & Chondritin is good for his joints. You can get this from Goldshield under the name of "Flexi-Paws". I give it to my 10 yr. old Golden and he is as fit as a fiddle. Once he gets rid of all that excess weight he will want to go out for his walks again I'm sure. Swimming is excellent exercise of course.

Where do people get off making statements like this - are we supposed to not have kids if we only buy them chain store clothes now?? The diet you are feeding your dog (raw meaty bones/prey model etc) is far superior than any commercial processed foods so obviously you care about your dog and have researched how to care for him correctly. Q. if that is why. Is he just not doing well on it? He used to be very enthusiastic and bugging me all the time I'm on the computer. Now he just goes in the other room and sleeps. So I'm wondering, is the raw food making him sick? (he doesn't have diarrhea or vomit) or is it just the switch in food. He started on the raw last week. It is frozen prepared. Very high quality organic meats, bones, organs, and veggies. Thanks Elaine, I do bring him to dog parks often. I haven't for the past couple weeks though due to my own health problem but I will bring him back again.
