How do you mark eggs that a hen is sitting on?
Q. I have two banty hens sitting on a pile of eggs together side by side, but there are too many eggs under them to keep warm at once. Every day as more eggs are laid by other hens they scoop those in the pile and sit on those as well. I thought i would mark 6 eggs with stickers and call it good. That way every morning I can go get the fresh eggs and know which ones are fresh. Will the hens take offence to the stickers on the eggs? Are there any better ways to mark them?

A. i had the same problem a while back. the ideal situation would be to prevent the other hens from laying eggs into the nests. however, if you can't do that, u could resort to using a pencil or crayon. just make a clear mark on each egg. the hens will not be bothered by the marks. make sure to check the nests when the hens leave to feed, taking out the freshly laid eggs.

What prevents chicken eggs from developing when buying them from the supermarket?
Q. Are chicken eggs fertilized when you buy them? Can chickens only lay eggs if a roster is able to fertilize the egg? Does refrigerating the egg prevent it from developing? If I took an egg from the supermarket and kept it warm (incubate it), will it hatch to a chicken?
Asked by sounny - Tue Mar 2 23:50:05 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No. Most eggs are not fertilized. And obviously hens can lay without this. Yes, refrigerating an eggs would prevent it. It could only possibly work if the egg was fertilized - and you can buy those in specialty stores - but as the eggs are often pasturized it's not likely anything could survive to grow.

How many eggs can a female cockatiel store in her body at a time?
Q. I know that she can lay a clutch of 2-8 eggs and can lay an egg every 48 hours. I know that cockatiels are smaller birds, so how many eggs can she carry at a time? Is it just one and then she makes another every 48 hours? Then how does that work? Does the sperm from the male just stay in there and fertilize more eggs?
Asked by Rayla - Fri Jul 2 19:40:29 2010 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments
A. Females form one egg at a time, they have no sort of egg storage system. It takes a female between 20-24 hours to form an egg. Sperm can live inside of a female for a brief window of time. It will fertilize the egg cell, and one by one they will form actual eggs.

How long will eggs last in the refrigerator?
Q. How long after the sell-by date will eggs stay good in a refrigertor and is there any way to tell if they're bad other than breaking them open and smelling them? I want to make some chicken salad and I need a hard-boiled egg, but I usually only eat egg-beaters and the package on this pack of eggs had a sell-by date of 7-05-2006. The fridge is really chilly on the inside, so do you think that it'll still be good? *It is marked with a packed on date and a sell by date. It doesn't have a use by date. Thanks everyone! I dropped it in a deep mixing bowl filled with water and it sank. It wasn't like a rock at the bottom, one end bobbed a little, but it stayed on the bottom. Time for some chicken salad and sour cream muffins, yay!

A. Here is how to tell if they are still fresh after the expiration date: Fill a deep bowl or pan with enough cold tap water to cover an egg. Place the egg in the water. If the egg lies on its side on the bottom, the air cell within is small and it's very fresh. If the egg stands up and bobs on the bottom, the air cell is larger and it isn't quite as fresh. If the egg floats on the surface, it it should be discarded. A very fresh egg out of the shell will have an overall thick white which doesn't spread much and the yolk will stand up.

How long do eggs last in the fridge?
Q. My mom gets me brown fresh eggs from a person she works with, and i tell ya they make the eggs at the grocery store look like Robin eggs, cause these are hudge, but how long do they last,i'm assuming longer than supermarket eggs cause they're brand new.

A. Fresh eggs bought directly from the producer are normally only a few days old. Ones from the store can be 3 weeks old by the time we buy them. As a result, the fresh eggs will last longer once we get them home. Store eggs should be good in the fridge for 2 or 3 weeks, provided they haven't been subjected to extreme temperature changes. Fresh eggs a good couple weeks longer.

How are the eggs we eat different from the eggs that produce a chick?
Q. Are the eggs we eat chicken fetuses? Or are they not fertilized? How does a rooster fertilize an egg? Are all eggs we eat capable of becoming a chick?
Asked by cherished_angel22 - Sun Apr 9 18:46:55 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The chicken eggs we eat are unfertilised and not foetuses. (Although I have heard urban myths where someone has cracked an egg and found a baby chick inside). In natural circumstances (esp. in the wild), unfertilised eggs are rarely laid. A rooster will fertilise a hen's egg through mating and the egg is laid and incubated until it hatches into a chick. Farm hens produce an enormous number of eggs unfertilised for human consumption, as a result of human farming technology.

A. Some of the acid content and salt is absorbed into the first batch of eggs, so the concentration is reduced. If the concentrations fall too low, the pickling process will not retard the decay process. You can 'top up' any salt, but for the vinegar, you might want to add a bit of the 'concentrated pickling vinegar' or 'vinegar essence'. You might want to bring the liquid to the boil (before you top up) if you are concerned about hygiene, but the acid and salt are the long time traditional 'disinfecting agents' anyway, which is WHY they were used from ancient times! Do NOT boil the mixture in an aluminum pan, it will dissolve it and the aluminum can cause health problems! Use Stainless Steel or ceramic. You might want to add a little… [cont.]

How many eggs do you need to egg houses?
Q. I have about 5 people sleeping over, we wanna go egging, how many eggs do you think we'll need? Also, do you have any tips?
Asked by Honey Everything - Thu May 27 21:33:57 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You'll want at least a dozen each. The best ones to buy are goose eggs (the big purple ones) but it depends on where you live - some areas don't sell them. After you get your eggs, leave them out in the sunshine for at least a few days. This will get them nice and stinky! I suggest carrying them in the carton, but also in a disposable dark colored bag - in case you get caught you can ditch the bag quick. Have fun!

How many eggs do 3 Chickens lay per week?
Q. I have 3 free range hens. Everynight they go into the greenhouse by themselves to sleep. They eat bugs in the yard & are pretty much self sufficient. But i have not seen any eggs, are they hiding the eggs somewhere? Should i lock them in the greenhouse so i can find the eggs easier? No Rooster. Too loud for the neighbors.

A. Hens will lay about one egg a day, depending on the breed and age of the hen. It's rare for a hen to lay more than one a day. Assuming they are old enough to lay, and if adult haven't started molting yet, they are probably hiding their eggs. Having a special place like a coop, and the green house could work, for them to lay helps. But they will need to be locked in that area for awhile (one to two weeks) to get them started. Sometimes you have to lock them up periodically to remind them.

How long do eggs stay fresh in the refridgerator?
Q. I've eaten eggs that were a month past their "sell by" date, and they were fine. I wonder just how long I can eat them past that date, when stored in the refridgerator. I have some eggs that are 6 months past sell by date, and think that MAY be pushing it, or maybe the egg industry just wants us to think they expire much faster than they do so we buy more. Anybody know?

A. The best way to check to see if your eggs are still good, is to simply put them in a glass/bowl of water. If the egg sinks and lays on it's side, then your eggs are still good. If they stand up on end, then they're ok, but need to be used soon. If your eggs float then they need to be thrown out. Generally eggs last 4-5 weeks after their expiration date, but the best way to check is still the float test. Because of the porous nature of the egg shell, as they eggs "age" some of the liquid inside evaporates, leaving a small air pocket which will cause them to either sink, or float. To prolong the life of your eggs, keep them in the carton (as opposed to putting them in a container. It also helps to keep the eggs covered so they do not… [cont.]

Why are bird eggs smaller on one end than the other?

A. Bird eggs are typical egg shape, structurally it is very strong in the longitudinal axis. It has very good weight to strength ratio, as far as outer protective cell goes, every thing about bird is that way, this is why they are able to fly.

How do I cook over-easy eggs without breaking the yoke?
Q. I usually put the burner on medium, and heat a thin layer of olive oil. I then crack the eggs on the side of the pan, and drop them onto the pan. 50% of the time, the egg yolk breaks instead of staying intact. Does anyone have any suggestions or techniques to increase the chance that the eggs yolk doesn't break? Also, in the above method, I often get little pieces of the shell in the egg. Any ideas how to avoid that too would be greatly appreciated!

A. Preparation: Always use a non-stick finished frying pan, like teflon, silverstone, etc. Be sure to put a bit of cooking oil / margarine into the pan as it's heating up. Step 1: Always break the egg(s) into a bowl or cup before putting them into the frying pan. This way you can remove any pieces of eggshell easily with a spoon. Step 3: Always use a non-stick utensil (that is is very good condition) to make the flip. Final Note: For an over easy egg, the range burner (whether gas or electric) can usually be turned off right after you flip them over. They will finish cooking just from the heat of the pan.

A. If the goal is to have no eggs left in the basket after a removal then it sounds like you should start with seven. I never heard the question before so I don't know if there are other constraints that could make that wrong.

I usually will buy a couple of dozen of eggs and let them hang out in the fridge a little before boiling them - like a week. How many normal-sized eggs should I use instead of one large egg?
Q. I just got a new recipe book but all the recipes include "large eggs", which try as I might I haven't been able to find anywhere. So can I use one normal-sized egg instead of a large one? Or maybe I need more? Help will be greatly appreciatted!

A. If the recipe says 'one large egg' I would just use one normal sized egg - perhaps add a little more milk (or whatever liquid is in the recipe) to compensate. Maybe if the recipe calls for, say, six large eggs you could throw in an extra one! I don't think there's a huge difference between normal and large. Bon appetit!

Why do my Discus keep eating the eggs on the second day of spawning?
Q. Well after dealing with the problem of my Male Discus. My other pair has spawned and for the fifth time on the second day of taking care of their eggs they have ate all them. And every time its on the second day they don't go white or anything but they still eat it. I have tested all the appropiate tests for it too see if there is any ammonia or nitrates or anything that would make it eat their young but they all came back normal. They are kept in a simple tank with gentle filtration with nothing disturbing them like loud noises or other fish in the tank. They also take really good care of their eggs as they take it in turn to feed and fan the eggs so i don't know whats wrong. Also i think that the eggs are fertilised as they don't turn… [cont.]

A. Discus eggs, and other cichlid eggs, are typically a clear and/or slightly pink color when fertilized. If they are young discus, I would give them another chance before taking the eggs and hatching them yourself. Raising discus fry is very difficult because part of their feeding when they are very young is actually off the mucous excreted on the sides of the parents. If your tank is in a well traveled part of the house, they could be bothered by pets or people walking past the tank. Try taping some black poster paper on the front and one side (the side closest to the eggs) of the tank next time they lay eggs to cut down on outside motion. I would also put a small night light (like for a kid's bedroom) next to the tank so they can see… [cont.]

What's the difference between using egg whites and whole eggs?
Q. I'm going to bake a cake, and I've noticed that some recipes call for whole eggs, and others just egg whites. What difference does it make for the cake? If a recipe says whole eggs-what would happen if I just used egg whites?? I understand what the actual difference is. I meant what difference does it make for the cake.

A. Your cake would probably be okay if you only used egg whites instead of whole eggs, but realize you'll have to use extra egg whites to make up the difference in liquid. Most recipes consider an egg to be 1/4 cup of liquid, so increase the quantity of egg whites accordingly.

A. A lot depends on how much they have been bashed around in the mail, but they might still be ok after four days. It's not killing ducks! All it is is fertile eggs sent through the mail to be hatched out, i.e. allowed to live!
