How much Muscle in pounds can you build with bodyweight exercises?
Q. I want a rough estimate to how many pounds of muscle can I build with just bodyweight exercises if you are weak to start off with them. I am overweight and I'm planning on building some muscle and losing fat from bodyweight exercises. Will I be able to get abs and a defined, muscular body just by doing bodyweight exercises? When I say defined, muscular body, I'm thinking maybe 25% of the muscle Arnold Schwarzenegger had when he was bodybuilding.

A. Do you plan on doing any cardiovascular work along with the exercises? you can lose the body-fat and uncover the muscle you already have. You can also tone up the muscles you already have by conditioning exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, crunches etc. The average male can naturally only put on 12-15 lbs of lean muscle in a years time. Without strength training with resistance, I'd say you could tone up your existing muscle and probably put on a few (5-7) pounds of additional muscle in a year. Doing the cardio to burn the fat is the most important thing you can do to shed the fat. In fact you would have to do it in order to accomplish your goal. Eating healthy is key as well. I like to recommend the 40-30-30 plan. 40% carbs, 30 %… [cont.]

A. lift weights definatly and run alot drink alot of water and do yoga (it works to help strengthen ur balance and core muscles) practice balancing on a straight line (or beam even tho u don't use the beam) by staring or closing ur eyes and lift on leg up in coupe then to the side straight out and hold it, do handstands and pop off of ur shoulders to help in vault and do chair dips to tone ur muscles to v-ups and straddle-ups push ups and leg lifts witll work too, it also helps to just stand there practicng having tight legs and arms and abs. point toes in hollowbodies and swimmers oh yeah and swimming will help

Can bodyweight exercises with added weight have hypertrophy/bodybuilding effects?
Q. If I add extra weight to my exercises, such as a backpack to pushups/pullups and overload my muscle to reps of like 8-12, can it give me large mass like weights or similar?
Asked by em2241992 - Fri Dec 25 10:48:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes it can. Try to aim for a little lower reps if you can though. Add enough weight so you can only do 5-8 reps. To build muscle you need to lift really heavy weights. If it's easy, it's not working.

What type of physique does someone get by using ONLY bodyweight exercises?
Q. How does it compare to a weightlifting physique?
Asked by Derick G - Fri Jun 4 22:10:20 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on what exercises you do. You'd be surprised...there are things you can do that can build your muscle mass up a lot with no weights needed. But, you'll most likely have a lean physique over a huge and bulky one, something like a young jackie chan (just google him shirtless if you're wondering). Gymnists do lots of body weight exercises and use isometrics to gain incredibly strength without using weights. If you're simply doing standard pushups and crunches however you'll eventually reach a point where your muscle isnt going to get any bigger unless you do more challenging exercises which can't be done for 50+ reps. Idk what level you are at now, you may be able to have great benefits from doing standard body weight exercises… [cont.]

A. If you re looking for a heavy workout; A friend told me there are some great exercises here Also recommended Wall Walking 1. Stand with your back and heels flat against the wall. 2. Take two steps, heel to toe, until you are three feet from the wall. 3. From there, lean backward with your hands stretched above your head. 4. Slowly move your hands down the wall. Continue walking until your head lightly touches the floor while your chest is facing the ceiling in an arch. 5. Turn to your stomach and stand up again. Repeat until you have done 10 repetitions. 6. Breathe naturally while doing this exercise. Hope it helps

Is it true that do bodyweight exercises (pushups) only tone muscles, not grow them?
Q. So no matter how slow i do pushups, they won't help "grow"? Question no. 2, do pushups help deltoids? if not, then what bodyweight exercises help? thx
Asked by Foode C - Fri Jun 12 18:59:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Muscle strain and damage in the presence of testosterone causes more resources to be diverted to rebuilding that muscle. So, until your chest is used to the exertion from a pushup, it will grow. Once the strain of a pushup can be handled, though, then the muscle works on endurance. However, I have heard (from an old martial arts teacher) that slow pushups...really slow deep ones...cause enough muscle damage to help enlarge the chest. If you ever get used to pushups with your weight, though, just wear a backpack with something heavy in it while you do pushups. Question 2: They mainly use the front deltoid, maybe the middle deltoid a bit. The wideness of your hands determines how much load is placed on the deltoid. I don't know of… [cont.]
