starvation during pregnancy? How long can a baby live inside a womb before dieing of starvation?
Q. Most people can live up to 2 months without eating anything, fat people can live up to 7 months without eating anything. Im wondering because of people who starve in different countries but are still able to make babies. How long can the fetus stay inside the womb before dieing of starvation? starvation meaning, no eating anything at all. doesn't the baby die first? are there any websites with this kind of research?

A. There are always nutrients in the body. Baby takes all that it need from mom and mom gets the left overs. If mom dies, then so does baby.

What happens to a person suffering starvation when they are suddenly given food?
Q. I'm writing a crime drama and my killer is starving his victim to death -- oh the crazy notions of a writer's mind... I recall from a 'way back when' history class that the instructor told us that Allied forces who first arrived to liberate WWII prison camps, accidentally attributed to the death of prisoners by giving them their K-rations and chocolate, but I don't know WHY this killed them. Or how. Internally, what exactly happens when a person suffering starvation is given solid foods? How exactly does this kill them?

A. Shock. The body, being accustomed to having low amounts of nutrition, can't handle the sudden influx of food. The body actually uses alternative chemicals during starvation (meaning, not glucose). The body might not even have enough energy to break down the given food, rendering it useless and could be considered toxic. For treatment, liquids with the most basic of basic nutrients should be provided first. Water with sugar would suffice, though if you put in the wrong concentration (deviant to that in intravenous bags), you could harm the person as well. Or, for bloodier (i.e. more apt to a crime drama) reasons, the stomach and internal organs, due to lack of bulk food, atrophy and weaken. It's a muscle, see. And without 'exercise', it… [cont.]

What are the physical steps/symptoms of starvation in a place where you only have access to water?
Q. If a woman were marooned on a deserted island and her only resources were fresh water and sand, what would happen to her? What are the usual physical steps of starvation- fatigue, weight loss, loss of mental acuity, what else?
Asked by Elizabeth S - Thu May 15 22:07:50 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Individuals experiencing starvation lose substantial fat (a.k.a. adipose) and muscle mass as the body breaks down these tissues for energy. Catabolysis is the process (medical condition) of a body breaking down muscles and other tissues in order to keep vital systems such as the nervous system and heart muscle (myocardium) working. Catabolysis will not begin until there are no usable sources of energy coming into the body. Vitamin deficiency is also a common result of starvation, often resulting in anemia, beriberi, pellagra, and scurvy. These diseases collectively may cause diarrhea, skin rashes, edema, and heart failure. Individuals are often irritable and lethargic as a result. Atrophy (wasting away) of the stomach weakens the… [cont.]

I know I am going to gain a lot of fat, but I want to know for how long, so then after I can start building muscle back up. Or am I stuck like this forever?

A. You stomach is smaller. If you want to gain weight you need to keep yourself feeling full so you can eat more at a sitting. That can take a week or three. You can start building muscle as soon as you are no longer underweight. Just start eat normal amounts of food. Take a vitamin. Start forcing yourself to exercise. It takes 2 to 4 weeks of exercise before your body will get use to doing them. For the first few it will feel like dragging yourself into it for each time. Keep the workouts light to start. Overdoing it is the biggest beginner's mistake. Also build up a large enough collection of exercises that you can vary your workout every day. Doing the same workout day after day raises the risk of injury and builds muscle resistance to… [cont.]

How many calories can I eat without going to starvation mode?
Q. I know if you eat to little that your body will go into a starvation mode and your body will store all the fat instead of help you lose it. I want to eat as less as possible. So what is the least amount of calories a female that is 5'6 can get away with? PS: The point in my diet is not really to lose the weight, but get into shape and lose fat and gain muscle.

A. well the number of calories one can take without having to little or to much is different for everyone. try to have snacks at every meal nothing big. so you trick your system. cold water is suppose to take up one pound because it has to be heated in your stomach so you loose 1 lb every time you drink cold water. i had a nutritionist and a instructor lol eck. they put me on a blood type diet and gave me shots that had to be special ordered to get rid of water weight . turns out im allergic to half the stuff i eat and it causes me to retain water. go figure.

How do you get past a plateau without going into starvation mode?
Q. I am 5'7" 139 lbs, I eat about 1200-1400 calories a day. I have a heart condition and am unable to exercise (I am only allowed to do gentle stretching), so the only thing I can do is diet. I want to get past my weight loss plateau but I'm worried my body will go back into starvation mode. I've heard mildly increasing caloric intake can actually help, is this true? Has anyone tried it? How many calories do you need to not go into starvation mode?
Q. I have read 1200 so I have been eating that much because I used to eat about 300 and just didn't lose any more weight after a while. But I have got my matabalisum back up again. Will anything less then 1200 make you go into starvation mode?

A. First of all, a doctor can tell you and I think that you should see one BEFORE you do anything. This sounds really scary to me because it sounds as though you might be anorexic or on the verge of it. Please make an appointment with a doctor and talk to them about it. 1200 calories sounds not bad but then i have no clue on the subject. Eating the bare minimum isn't going to keep the weight off. In fact, it makes it worse because whatever you eat, your body stores and then it will start to feed off of your body then that's very serious. Ask a doctor.

How to avoid starvation mode with anorexia?
Q. Is it possible to avoid starvation mode when only eating dinner everyday (under 500 calories) and drinking alot of water? Please professional, researched answers, no opinions.
Asked by hundredsandthousands - Wed Feb 25 06:05:22 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you avoid carbohydrates for 3-7 days (each person is different) you will enter a state called "ketosis" where your body would burn fat for energy. You will know when you're in ketosis because you will feel more energetic and you will lose your appetite. however if you eat any carbohydrates you will be pulled out of ketosis immediately (ie. no more fat burning).

A. I hate to tell you this, but she could die from that. You need to tell somebody. There's only ONE WAY to lose fat - and that is to create a calorie deficit. However, there are two ways to create a calorie deficit - one is to decrease your food intake so you are eating less than you burn, the other is to increase your exercise and activity so you are burning more than you eat. Of the two ways to create a calorie deficit, burning the fat is far superior to starving it. You see, cutting calories too much causes weight loss at first, but it also causes muscle loss and it eventually leads to a decrease in metabolism, so the weight loss stops. This is very common on conventional diets, right? You lose weight in the beginning, but then you hit… [cont.]

A. I'm going to be honest with you. Starvation mode varies with different people. In other words, the amount of caloric deficit it takes for your body to go into starvation mode is different than what it would take for mine to. Usually it takes eating 50% or less of the amount of calories you need in a day for about a week, but this is always different for every person. So if you eat like this for one week, you will lose a lot of weight, 5-10 pounds or so but the next week you will slow down weight loss a little bit. If you continue to eat like this, you will continue to lose weight. Some idiots on this site like to say "Oh if you eat less than 1200 calories you'll go into starvation mode and gain weight!!!" They're completely wrong. … [cont.]

A. For a normal healthy person at a good weight, they will start to starve after a week. Humans can live for two weeks without food til serious effects happen, and i mean serious. But we can only live for 3 days without water, so if you ill just make sure you drink alot of water and you'll be fine, and when your better your metabolism will go back to a steady rate.

What happens after you increase your caloric intake after your body has been in starvation mode?
Q. What happens after you increase your caloric intake after your body has been in starvation mode? Does metabolism slowly get used to more food and even out so you don't gain weight, or are you stuck with a slow metabolism forever?

A. after you have been starving yourself for a long time dont just jump to your required daily intake - add about 50cal/day every week so your body can get used to it (e.g. you eat 1000cal every day this week then next week eat 1050cal/day, a week after - 1100cal/day etc), dont eat less than 1000cal/day - its already too little, but its ok for a while till you get where you have to be. you will gain weight at first but dont overobsess about it - because by starving body has lost water weight and muscle and its gona get all of that back. find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain your weight. eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours) 5-8 servings of… [cont.]

Does the body go into starvation mode if you eat 1500 calories in a day but then run say 13 miles and burn it?
Q. They say you don't lose body fat from starving yourself. So I'm wondering if eating a normal amount of calories, but then burning it all off leads to your body going into starvation mode as well. Thanks for any help.

A. you wont loose body fat from starveing yourself because when your body goes into starvation mode it converts all calories into instant fat. i would say that if you rune 13 miles which is a lot when your done eat untill your just full. but running 13 miles takes a lot and that long of a run with only 1500 calories powering it will probobly make your body go into a semi starvation mode.

Mental condition of someone suffering from starvation for weeks?
Q. I wonder how it is the mental condition of a person who is suffering from starvation, not eating practically nothing, for a period of 2 or more weeks. There may be brain damage? A person can act insane? If you know what happens, please, I need to know, can not find specific information.

A. Not good news. Starvation causes little to no energy and makes a person's mind and body lethargic. Very harmful.
